Well Handicapped Brassica the Bet of the Day at Redcar

As the flat season comes towards the end, we don’t usually see many horses like the one we are going to talk about here, horses who are well ahead of their handicap mark. These have usually ran and shown promise through the summer, and are often rated as they should be when we get to this stage. However, Brassica is an exception to that, she’s only ran once so far this season due to an injury, but that was an exceptional run and came just last week.

She finished third in a listed contest at Yarmouth on that occasion, running well above her handicap mark. She was officially rated 83 before that race, and rightfully so she has now been put up to a mark of 93 after that promising run.

However, the big draw here is that because of how the handicapping system works with a slight delay attached to it, she can still run off 83 here and trainer Sir Mark Prescott has quickly found her a race to run in before that mark rises.

She can also take advantage of the weight for age allowance she gets here as a three year old, and this is something that often works in the favour of three year olds as we arrive at this part of the season, so another big positive for her.

If you are looking for a negative here then perhaps the only thing you could suggest here is that when she ran last week it was her first run for around a year. She is now being asked to go again just seven days later, which some horses will struggle to do.

Having said that though, the positives certainly outweigh that potential negative and she is certainly a horse worth following at Redcar. The race ahead of her on Wednesday is not the toughest of races, it looks to be a run of the mill handicap for this time of year and Brassica can take advantage of that and put a win on the board before her mark increases considerably.
