Enable Cracks America but Will She Race Next Season
It may not have been the biggest race on the card at the Breeders Cup on Saturday, but going into the meeting all European eyes were on Enable in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. We’ve only seen her three times this season, so there was no doubt she would be fresh and ready to go after arriving in America. She was aiming to become the first Arc winner to go and win at the Breeders Cup, and that was something she achieved in style under jockey Frankie Dettori.
The Italian was at his best on the big stage once again, keeping Enable up with the pace before moving her to the outside and coming with a run that would win the race. She powered home and wasn’t for catching, with the Aidan O’Brien trained Magical chasing her home in second place.
It was a fantastic way to end the season for this wonderful filly, a horse that has really captured the hearts of the racing public over her last two seasons. The decision about her future will have to be made over the next few weeks, and that is something that will no doubt be tough on owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.
The Prince runs the Juddmonte breeding operation so it is in his interest to move Enable into the breeding barn as soon as possible, however he will certainly be tempted to keep her in training. By keeping her she can return as a five year old and go for a third Arc in a row, something that would write her into the history books if she was able to land the race once again.
Awaiting in the breeding barn will be a date with fellow superstar Frankel, and if they create a positive match then who knows how good their offspring could be.
